The Tagging Game: 7 Facts about me!

1. Despite having a very English accent I am in actual fact Maltese, thus ensuring that a generation of English, Kenyan and Irish students all know where Malta is, that it is not a Colony of the UK and that yes it does have its own language!!

2. I used to live three hours drive from the Masai Mara and 20 minutes drive from a fabulous viewing point overlooking the Great African Rift Valley....do I miss it!!

3. In season 1998/99 I saw every Man Utd home game despite living and teaching in London (I also never missed one minute of school because of it!) I also had a ticket for the Champions League final in Barcelona!! But didn’t go! Do I regret it....

4. I have seen Les Misarables about 18 times and can sing most of the score. Am I a bit sad...

5. I still love The Cure.

6. My daughter is called Elsa...named after the lion cub in Born Free...that was based in Kenya.

7. At the 1994 Finsbury Park Fleadh, I saw Kirsty MacColl and Shane McGowan sing ‘Fairytale of New York’ together...live! It was awesome.

Monday 15th September, Bruce Parry is travelling the length of the Amazon, meeting some of the people who live along the river, discovering their stories, and exploring some of the issues that they face.

Google turns the lights out!

Google users in Ireland had their "lights turned out" on the Google.ie homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour.

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in theirlocal time zone. On this day, cities around the world, will hold eventsto acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

Pangea Day...10th May 2008

Pangea Day, is the result of filmmaker Jehane Noujaim's 2007 TED Wish to Change the World. It will be a global day of international film- an effort to bridge cultural divides and increase our understanding of our global neighbours.

The films will be broadcast live on the internet and television. There will also be a series of main sites in cities across the continents- Cairo, Kigali, London, LA, Mumbai and Rio, along with a growing number of smaller events around the world.

The short film below is an example of what will be broadcast, for those who remember Tiananmen Square it is an interesting take...

Hurricanes

Below is the answer the question that Meg asked in class today...from the 'How Stuff Works' website.

Hurricanes that threaten the United States start their lives over the Sahara desert in Africa. They move out over the Atlantic Ocean to build into tropical storms and then hurricanes. While they are over the Atlantic near the equator, hurricanes are pushed toward the U.S. by trade winds. Trade winds are very consistent westward winds near the equator.

Once the storm rises up toward 25 or 30 degrees latitude (the top of Florida is at latitude 30 degrees), the trade winds are no longer a factor, and local weather over the United States has a big influence. Winds along the East Coast tend to blow in a north or northeast direction, and there is also the eastward-blowing jet stream. These winds often cause a storm that comes in from the west and appears to track right up the East Coast, or to approach the East Coast and then back off. Any number of fronts or pressure zones may be in place over the U.S. as the hurricane comes in, and these systems have their own winds that can significantly influence a hurricane as well. If a storm tracks from the west and does not get far enough north to lose the effect of the trade winds, it will instead continue westward into the Gulf of Mexico with the trade winds and land in Texas or Mexico.
